Drive system
A hydraulic elevator uses a jack and power unit to move the cabin. It suits villas and 2–6 stop buildings that cannot put a machine room on the roof. Atlas Asanbar Arsh designs and installs in Tehran, Karaj, and cities across northern Iran.

System anatomy
A hydraulic cabin rises on oil pressure, not on an overhead motor and counterweight. The power unit — motor, pump, tank, and valves — usually sits in a small room beside the shaft, at grade, or in the basement. The pump sends oil to the jack and the piston lifts the car. Descent uses the car’s own weight; valves only meter the flow so the stop stays smooth.

Oil pressure extends a piston that lifts the cabin. Direct-acting (under the car) or indirect (beside the shaft with ropes), depending on shaft size.
On ascent the pump sends oil to the jack; on descent valves regulate flow so the car comes down controlled and smooth.
The passenger car. Finish and size come from catalog or custom specs — independent of the drive system.
No rooftop machine room. That is why hydraulic is practical for villas and retrofits with limited overhead.
The jack sits either directly under the car, or indirectly beside the shaft with ropes. In Iranian villas and retrofits the indirect layout is more common because the pit is rarely deep enough for a direct jack. We settle that after measuring the shaft — not from a brochure.
You pick the cabin separately from the drive — catalog or custom. The quote comes after the site visit; stops, power-unit and safety-valve brands, cabin finish, and shaft condition move the number.
Use cases
Hydraulic fits a building that is not tall and does not want a rooftop machine room. A three-level villa, a five-stop apartment, a quiet clinic — those are usually the jobs.

When the shaft headroom is constrained, hydraulic with a side machine room is often the practical retrofit path.

Power unit at ground level, basement, or beside the shaft — no rooftop machine room required.

Hydraulic systems handle light freight, retail, clinics, and buildings where top speed is not the priority.
If the shaft headroom is short, or the building is old and the pit is shallow, hydraulic is often the only practical path. Do not push this system on a tower, or where the lift must run fast at peak hours — traction or MRL is the better fit.
An honest picture
On low-rise work, hydraulic does a few things well: a smooth ride, a machine room beside the shaft, and a controlled descent if power fails. Those points hold when the building stays in the five-to-six-stop range.
At low speeds, start and stop are gentle. For villas and 3–5 stop apartments, passenger experience is typically excellent.
Safety valves prevent free fall; the car descends in a controlled way to the lowest stop and doors open at level.
In low-rise buildings, initial install cost is typically lower than traction — especially when overhead space is missing.
The power unit sits beside the shaft, at grade, or in the basement. For villas and retrofits with tight overhead, this is often the only practical path.
Hydraulic is built for calm travel. If higher speed is a project priority, traction or MRL is a better fit.
Usually up to 5–6 stops. Beyond that, jack length and oil volume grow and efficiency drops.
The pump works on the way up; ascent energy use is typically higher than a comparable traction lift.
Hydraulic systems need periodic service, leak checks, and a serviceable pit. Proper install and certified valves reduce risk — they do not remove it.
Better to name the limits in the first meeting. Past six stops the jack gets longer and the oil volume grows — cost rises and service gets harder. The pump works on the way up, so ascent power use is usually higher than a comparable traction lift. Oil also needs periodic checks. If the building is busy, switch to traction from here.
Choosing a drive
If your building has up to 6 stops, limited overhead, or priorities of smooth ride and reasonable low-rise cost, hydraulic is a strong option. Beyond 6 stops, higher speed, or very heavy traffic, consider traction or MRL.

Read the table against your building, not against which system is “better.” A four-stop apartment with tight overhead is almost always hydraulic. The same building at eight stops, or with a lift that must run fast in peak hours, tips toward traction. In a retrofit there is sometimes no choice: pit and headroom will not allow traction.

A hydraulic install does not start with picking a cabin finish. First we see the shaft, pit, power, and where the power unit can sit. Without those measurements, two quotes cannot be compared.

After the survey, drawings and a phased quote follow: design, supply, install, handover. Exact timing depends on shaft readiness and equipment lead time. After testing we also coordinate the technical inspection. Handover means the lift works and inspection paperwork is moving — not just a cabin on rails.
How quotes are built
There is no fixed hydraulic price. Two four-stop villas can get very different quotes; usually one has a shorter jack and a simpler cabin, the other a tighter shaft, a dearer valve, or more landing doors.
We write the number after the survey. Stops and travel change jack length; capacity sits on the power unit; cabin and doors come from the catalog and move the figure there. If you only heard a lump sum, ask whether shaft steelwork, landing doors, and delivery are inside it.

An MRL elevator has no separate rooftop machine room. The drive usually sits in the hoistway on a support beam; the controller is often a cabinet at the top landing. Villa / home elevator
A villa elevator — often sold as a homelift or home elevator — is for a private house, duplex, or villa, not a shared apartment shaft.
